Professional Development Seminar Series - ‘Finding your fit as a team member’
by Ranjani Rao

The Central Illinois Section of Society of Women Engineers (SWE) assembled a diverse panel of professionals from the Central Illinois area on November 7th, 2007 at Barrack’s Cater Inn in Peoria, IL. Purpose was to assist finding a fit for an individual as a “team member” in a working environment.

The panel consisted of the following people:

Mary Beth Cooper – Leadership Team, Jr. League of Peoria
Jerry Nuese - Tractor Project Engineer, Caterpillar Inc.
Chandini Ammineni – Sr. Engineer, Caterpillar Inc.
Kaye Schroeder –Director, State Farm Insurance.
Dianne Fleming – Systems Vice President, State Farm Insurance

It was a very interactive session where in the seminar facilitator and attendees posed interesting questions to the panel and the panelists provided instant feedback and shared their experiences. Discussion topics included ‘making your team stronger when some of the team members don't get along’, ‘becoming a highly effective team even when you don't have the luxury of choosing your team members’, and ‘getting team members to follow through on their commitments in a positive manner etc.’. Each panelist enlightened the audience with unique thoughts, ideas and proposed what could be effective approaches to various situations and challenges being discussed.

Listed below are some highlights of the topics discussed and panelists’ responses:

Conflict between team members – Conflicts sometimes may happen when members of a team are similar in their personalities. May also happen when team members keep changing. More often than not, new members have a lack of understanding of the on-going project, which in turn may create an off-balance and force members to lose interest in the project. Solution is to make the team look at the big picture and the team leader should pull the team together and make it goal oriented.

Personality types – Observing each other’s behavior might help members on the team to gauge personalities and prepare for members’ reaction to various situations. This might help reduce conflicts since there would be a certain level of understanding between the team members.

Resolving issues b/n team members – There was a common agreement among panelists that letting the team members resolve issues amongst themselves is a better way of managing than taking issues and conflicts to ‘the boss’. A key take away was to not take office disagreements or conflicts personal. This would help to cultivate healthy working relationships.

Team losing focus – When a team appears to be losing focus and venting about various issues within the team, it is good to step up and take initiatives to try and improve the situation. If the problem is bigger than you, it is better to move on rather than getting stuck.

Communication – Often times, issues/conflicts between team members could be because of incorrect or insufficient communication. Quick clarification usually helps. Communication in a team environment is very important to keep everybody in loop with what’s going on and it helps to keep the positive energy going.

Recognition – Acknowledging peers for their efforts and recognizing them goes a long way. Although simple, recognizing individuals on the team for their contributions becomes a very important gesture to keep the team members motivated.

This seminar that was organized as part of the Professional Development Seminar Series of SWE-Central Illinois, was a learning hour for everybody gathered to take away good points and finding their fit as a good team member. In addition to this seminar, SWE-Central Illinois is also discussing some great ‘team building and team performing’ articles at their January Article Club event. Please check out the events section of the SWE website for time, place and date details. Members and Non-members are welcome to participate.
