Society of Women Engineers
The Society of Women Engineers, SWE, is
a national, nonprofit educational organization of over 16,000 professional
and student members dedicated to the following objectives:
Ÿ
To inform young women, their parents,
counselors, and the general public of the qualifications and achievements
of women engineers and the opportunities open to them
Ÿ
To assist women engineers in readying themselves
for a return to active work after temporary retirement
Ÿ
To encourage women engineers to attain high
levels of educational and professional achievement
Ÿ
To serve as a center of information on women
in engineering
SWE's mission is to
Ÿ
Stimulate women to achieve their full
potential in careers as engineers and leaders
Ÿ
Expand the image of the engineering
profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life
Ÿ
Demonstrate the value of diversity

The North
Country Section of the Society of Women Engineers, SWE
Ÿ
Was chartered on October 2, 1986
Ÿ
Has about 35 members including 12 SWE Senior
Members and 4 SWE Life Members
Ÿ
North Country SWE's membership is drawn from
the industrial, academic, consulting, and government sectors in Vermont
and eastern New Hampshire.
Ÿ
North Country SWE's Career Guidance Program
for K-12 students has won an unprecedented eight national SWE awards for
activities including:
Ÿ
Conducting an annual essay contest on
"Great Women in Science and Engineering" for sixth-grade
students.
Ÿ
Participating in Odyssey of the Mind
Competition at both the local and national level.
Ÿ
Participating as instructors at the Women in
Technology Project’s Summer Tech Camp at Vermont
Technical College.
Ÿ
Supporting SWE Student Sections at the
following colleges and universities within our section boundaries: University
of Vermont, Dartmouth
College, and Norwich
University.
Ÿ
Awarding Certificates of Merit to high
school women who have demonstrated three or more years of outstanding
achievement in math and science.
